It’s that time of year again, when the snow and “wintry mix” close the courses, and golfers are prone to the Winter Golf Blues. With the winter weather finally coming to North Carolina, and likely to linger later this year, golfers are facing the dreaded annual hiatus from the sport. While the Winter Golf Blues (WGB) isn’t recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) (yet!), this time of year the struggle is real. However, you don’t have to give in, and there are actually a variety of treatments for the condition. Here are a few suggestions:

1. Remember that you’re not alone! Seriously, WGB afflicts golfers around the world, and sometimes connecting with other folks who are going through the same thing can really help. Join Rumbling Bald Resort’s golf page on Facebook to get the latest information, pictures, jokes, course specials, and even tips from Director of Golf Adam Bowles. Plus connect with old friends and make some new ones to commiserate on the weather, and make plans for the glorious spring. And don’t forget to join Rumbling Bald’s Golf eClub to get the latest news and offers delivered right to your inbox.

2. Speaking of Adam Bowles, check out some of his pro tips for winter golfing for those times when you can get on the course. Some of these are surprisingly simple, but can make all the difference to your winter game.

3. Spend some time getting ready for spring. Get out the clubs and give them a good cleaning. Get rid of the mud and crud, and take an opportunity to make a close inspection of your gear. Maybe it’s time to get your clubs re-gripped, or even replace one here or there. Which leads to our next suggestion:

4. Go haunt some golf stores or pro shops. C’mon, you know you want to. Many stores now have their own test ranges right on site – go try out some different clubs, or see if it’s time to replace your bag, maybe some new gloves, or just a few new balls. Treat yourself!

5. Remember the PGA Tour is year-round. Even if you can’t get out onto the course, there’s still plenty of golf happening that you can enjoy. Follow the pros, and maybe join (or start) a fantasy golf league while you’re at it. Above all remember: spring is just around the corner, and with the right mental state, and a little help from your friends, you can avoid the Winter Golf Blues – and maybe even get ahead in your game while you’re at it!
