Fall is an incredible time in Western North Carolina. As the leaves change, the Blue Ridge Mountains become awe inspiring waves of reds, oranges, yellows and golds. Walks, drives, hikes and bikes that are full of breathtaking beauty all year round suddenly become magical, even otherworldly, concerts of color and grace. Complementing the changing season is a tradition of fall festivals and events as the folks around Lake Lure and Hickory Nut Gorge, and Rumbling Bald Resort makes for a perfectly luxurious base from which to explore and experience everything the season offers.

The Fun starts on Saturday, October 14th at the Gardenwoods Annual Fall Festival in Rutherfordton. This annual Alzheimer’s fundraiser is a local tradition, and this year’s festival will be in honor of Mike Wallace and Cove Creek BBQ, and will feature live bluegrass music by Winegrass, and apple and pumpkin bake-off, face painting, Corn Hole tournaments, as well as a variety of vendors.

Also on the 14th, head up to Chimney Rock State Park for Family Fun Day starting at 2pm both Saturday and Sunday. Join one of the park naturalists for an informal program in which the family can get up close with some of the amazing wildlife that make their homes in Chimney Rock, and Western North Carolina. Animal educators will provide fun facts and information about the animals, and you can round off the day with a trek on the parks’ Great Woodland Adventure trail where you may well see some of the animals in their natural habitat. Cameras are a must!

On October 21st enjoy the Lake Lure Arts & Crafts Festival in downtown Lake Lure, where over 100 artists will be personally exhibiting and selling their hand-made works from paintings to jewelry, glass-blowing to blacksmithing, the array of skill and artistry will delight and inspire the whole family. The day will also feature continuous live entertainment, and an outstanding array of food choices. You really don’t want to miss this wonderful day of arts, music, food, dance, and fun!

Finally, for some more adult-oriented fun, don’t miss the Annual Tryon Beer Fest in Tryon, NC from 12pm until 6pm on Saturday, November 4. This festival brings a little bit of Germany to the North Carolina mountains with authentic Bavarian food, live music, and of course local and regional craft beers.
