What we’re thankful for..

“Cultivating an attitude of gratitude begins with counting your blessings. In simpler terms, gratitude is expressing thanks for gifts we receive. Genuine gratitude helps us to see the little things in life that are often overlooked, yet so precious.”  ― Dana Arcuri

It’s amazing the simple pleasures we can take for granted – that’s what makes the season of Thanksgiving particularly wonderful. We can to take this time to sit back and reflect on the small joys we receive throughout the year. Here are a few things we are thankful for at Rumbling Bald Resort:

The Great Outdoors
No matter the season, our corner of the Blue Ridge Foothills supplies us with endless beauty. In spring, we see the rebirth of our landscape as Forsythia, Daffodils, Tulip Trees and others begin to bloom. In Summer, the warm air and cool water provide a wide variety of avenues for exploration be it hiking, fishing, biking or otherwise, and in Autumn, the tree leaves blaze brightly before their winter slumber – a winter which occasionally brings “that fluffy stuff”, which seems to make everything magical.

Members and Guests
Our member and guests are the heart and soul of the Resort. They bring love, laughter and joy to our facilities and property. Nothing warms our hearts more than hearing a resident or vacationer speak about how much they love the Resort! We are so thankful that our members have chosen to make RBR home and that our guests choose to come back year after year.

And speaking of guests – we’re especially thankful to those who choose to celebrate their “BIG DAY” here. Throughout the year, we have the opportunity to host the family and friends of couples across the US on their wedding day! Its such as joy to share in their love on such a special day.

Lake Lure
We would be remiss if we did not mention how thankful we are for our proximity to Lake Lure. From the crew teams who break its waters in early spring and the couples who lounge on the beach in the summer and the children who speed tube during camp to the marshmallow bonfires held alongside its waters in the fall – we couldn’t ask for a better place to work or live!

A few of our employees are thankful for:
“I am thankful for my friends and family and for being able to wake up to a new day every morning.”
“For the support of loved ones, endurance through the bad time and all the blessings in my life.”
“Being able to share this life with the ones I love.”

A few of our members are thankful for:
“Having the ability to know just how blessed we are to live in such a wonderful country.”
“My family and being able to appreciate life’s blessings.”
“Our new baby girl and the joy she brings us.”

What are you thankful for? From little to big, it’s always worth sharing.

How to Cool Off in Lake Lure

We’re at the height of summer and with temperatures reaching an all time high, staying cool is becoming increasingly difficult. Many fight the heat with a cold drink and an umbrella, but fail to fully escape. On the other hand, we at Rumbling Bald Resort prefer to dip into the cooling waters of Lake Lure. Our lakeside beach is the perfect spot for grilling and picnicking while enjoying a refreshing dip in the roped-off swimming area. We also offer the option of our many swimming pools and a lazy river

But if swimming is not your thing, we highly recommend any of the numerous, alternative amenities that we offer to keep the heat down and the fun high.

Pontoon Boat Rental
Set out in one of our family sized, twenty foot Bentley pontoon boats and enjoy a leisurely trip on the calm waters of Lake Lure. Our pontoon boats are available for rent by the hour at the North Shore Beach Cabana, and each have a carrying capacity of ten passengers.

Advanced boat reservations can be made by calling the North Shore Beach Cabana at 828-694-3019, or the Wellness Center at 828-694-3005.

Kayak & Canoe Rental
If you are looking for an up close and personal experience with the natural environment of Lake Lure, or our private Bald Mountain Lake, we highly recommend renting one of our kayaks or canoes. Enjoy a relaxing activity with you family and friends while bridging a connection with the beautiful scenery around the lake. Kayaks and canoes are rented by the hour with all of the required gear included with the cost. Single and double kayak rentals are located on Lake Lure, while canoe rentals can be found on Bald Mountain Lake.

SUPboards
If you are looking for a more thrilling way to experience Lake Lure, try our Stand-Up Paddle boards, or SUPboards. SUPboards, part surfboard and part kayak, are an easy to learn activity that is fun for the entire family. This has also rapidly become a guest favorite activity here at Rumbling Bald Resort. All SUPboard rentals are available for one to two hours at Lake Lure.

All rentals include life jackets.

Fun Outside of the Resort
If you are looking for other exciting alternatives, we also recommend the Broad River Paddle Trail, a forty-two mile long canoeing or paddling trail that stretches from Lake Lure to the Cleveland County line. More information can be found here: www.rutherfordoutdoor.org/outdoor-activities/paddling.

Ice Cream and Treats
After a fun day of swimming and spending time out on the lake, it’s nice to top off your experiences with a cool, sweet treat. Our North Shore Beach Cabana sells ice cream that will certainly help you beat the heat, or try the Rocking Leprechaun Ice Cream Parlor, located in nearby Chimney Rock, NC.

Jane Barea – The Common Thread for the Cure

When Jane Barea, a breast cancer survivor and interior design professional from Winston-Salem, NC, was undergoing treatments for breast cancer in 1996 she simply wanted to spend time enjoying the outdoors. So she played golf, which incorporated her love of the outdoors and was very therapeutic in her battle with the disease.

During the years following her remission, Jane knew she wanted to do something for others in her industry who were affected by breast cancer to help ease the financial burden that can come with treatment. Jane had attended a meeting for designers some time before at Rumbling Bald Resort and fell in love with the peaceful, calming atmosphere in Lake Lure. She decided to host a golf tournament at RBR to raise money for The Common Thread for the Cure Foundation, an organization in which Jane already had a relationship.

The Common Thread For The Cure Foundation, a 501 (c) (3), was founded in 2000 by Suzann Burkhead-Bray and Scott Burkhead in memory of their sister, Sandra Burkhead Campbell, who lost her long term battle with breast cancer in February 1999. It is The Common Thread For The Cure’s goal to support those persons or their families within the furnishings industry who have breast cancer through providing Helping Hand Grants. Currently, Jane serves on the Board of Directors and acts as President for the Foundation.

For its first year, Jane wanted the tournament to generate enough interest and participants that there would one group on every tee. She met this goal, and every year since the event has grown and developed into a thriving fundraiser. The tournament, which just celebrated its 14th year in April, has maxed out the courses’ allowance for participants for the last 5 years. All total, the Common Thread for the Cure Golf Tournament has provided over $300,000 for the Helping Hand Grants.

While planning the tournament hasn’t exactly gotten easier over the years, Jane knows that the overall awareness and funds that the event raises are greater than the work put in and the new challenges that arise each year. “My partnership with the planning team at Rumbling Bald Resort each year definitely helps create a successful event” for the Foundation. She knows that the peaceful, quiet setting of Lake Lure is perfect for the tournament and helps to get people away from their work and to focus on the event at hand.

Each year our team and staff get excited about the Common Thread for the Cure tournament and we look forward to its continued success. For more information on the The Common Thread for the Cure Foundation, its grants and events, or to make a donation, visit www.commonthread.info
